Athanasios Nikolaides, Ph.D.

Dr. Athanassios Nikolaides is a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece, and director of the Road Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering. He has extensive experience in the study of soil materials, bound and unbound aggregate materials, bituminous materials, asphalt mix design, pavement design, construction, maintenance, nondestructive testing, recycling and pavement management. From 1984 to 1989, he worked as a freelance engineer and project manager and has been with AUTh since 1989; in 2000, he became a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at AUTh. He teaches and researches Highway Engineering and Airport Engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has conducted several research projects funded by various organizations or agencies and numerous technical studies funded by private companies. He has published more than 70 papers in journals and conference proceedings and has presented more than 40 additional papers in seminars in various countries. He has also published three books in Greek with the following titles: Road Engineering (2011, 3rd edition), Airport Engineering (2002) and Flexible Pavements (2005). He is a member of professional institutions and has served on the scientific/technical committees of several international conferences; currently, he is a member of the editorial advisory panel of the ICE (UK) Journal of Construction Materials. He is the founder and chairman of the International Conference “Bituminous Mixtures and Pavements” which has been organized every 4 years since 1992. Prof. Nikolaides has been a consultant to several organizations and private companies in Greece, Europe and Indonesia. He specializes in road engineering, road materials and testing and airport engineering.
